Refugee Employment Support

Refugee Employment Support

The last pathway of our T.H.R.I.V.E. framework is “E” for Employment Readiness

Three of the most consistent challenges for refugee claimants for gaining employment are:

  • Language barriers
  • Getting credentials and experience recognized
  • Fair and equitable support in the job search process

Refugee claimants are often under-employed due to these challenges. Language – not just the words but the cultural differences of meaning – can make it hard to talk with potential employers, though they are ready to work!

Their work permits are temporary, the permit number starting with the iconic “9”. This sets them apart from the beginning as candidates with unknowns attached to them.

Their credentials and experience are often significant, but not recognized by Canadian employers.

Discrimination is, unfortunately, real. Refugee claimants are also seen as people who will do what others won’t, for pay others wouldn’t accept. They are unlikely to complain, not wanting to risk their claim process in any way.

All this means, the more refugee employment support we can offer, the greater the chance they have to be adequately employed and make ends meet.

We have identified four ways we can make a difference:

  • financial literacy training to help people understand pay and how to make ends meet
  • computer literacy training to make it easier to navigate online job search systems and applications
  • employment rights and responsibilities support to better manage their work context and not be afraid to speak up when needed
  • “ladder-building” – learning how to build and apply a strategy to reduce underemployment through skill recognition

We can also provide support in resume and interview preparation.

We are working on building these into modules that claimants can access at any time. If you would like to be part of a team that helps with refugee employment support, we would love to have you on our Employment Readiness Team.
