SPECIAL NEWS
(more details to come in our next impact report)
COMPASS Refugee Centre
Thank you to the WRPS for including us in their annual backpack drive! We have dozens of backpacks to get children off to a great start for school!
We welcomed MP Mike Morrice (Kitchener-Centre) to COMPASS to meet Natalia. We were able to hire her this summer because of Mike’s support for our application to the Canada Summer Job Grant Program. Mike is also leading a campaign to see the program restored from significant cuts to previous funding levels, ensuring young people like Natalia can continue to get great work experience at places like COMPASS.
We got a little busy with new clients coming into our local shelter system. Our amazing team of caseworkers met the peak in numbers by offering four group orientation sessions, three in English and one in Spanish. This proved to be a highlight for August and we will continue to do this as needed to get people started on their refugee claim process.
The clients appreciated the opportunity to meet with others in the same situation. Our office was filled and buzzing with activity, all computers in our T.H.R.I.V.E. space being used, and new relationships being formed!
Thank you for supporting COMPASS! You make it possible for us to quickly adapt and meet the need. We are now working on plans to get to the shelters to make it even easier for clients, and to support shelter staff who have been such a privilege to work with.
