Samuel sat in a chair in one of our meeting rooms, slouched and dejected. His children played nearby. His wife sat watching him with tears in her eyes.
On this day, he was meeting with our staff to talk about his next steps. His head hurt, the lights bothered his eyes, and the sounds of his children banging on toys were like a jack-hammer.
He had fled to Canada, seeking refuge, only to be beaten so badly by others that were suspicious of why he was here, that he suffered a life-altering brain injury. He was now struggling to piece together the facts needed for his refugee claim.
In addition, he and his family were divided between two emergency shelters because they couldn’t find an affordable place to stay. He and his family were met by our staff with respect and welcome, dignity, and compassion.
We helped his family get access to the supports and connections they needed to continue the rigorous refugee claim process that they hoped would end with them finding a home here in Canada. When others were saying, “NO ROOM”, we made room!
